It makes sense, fewer words allow the subject line to be succinct, even pithy. Shorter statements also have the benefit of being scannable in a dense inbox environment and easier to understand at a glance. The most well crafted usage of the technique are those subject lines in which the from address does the heavy lifting for brand recognition and the preheader snippet forms a bridge into the email content. Take a look at the best example from the batch.
Notice that Lululemon features a brand-centric from address "lululemon athletica", then asks a short question in the subject line, "got run goals?", finally transitioning in the preheader text snippet with "Fact: running with others makes you faster." -- very smart. I'm definitely inspired to give shorter subject lines a whirl.
